Considerations for dynamic stability of organisations as a challenge for leadership

Organisations go through processes of hybridisation during which they lose their old selves and synthesise new ones. When leadership as a system develops the ability to deal with the future, organisations can transform themselves through their own power. The degree to which the ability to deal with the future can unfold depends on leadership’s capacity to create reflective distance from itself on the one hand, and on self-reference to one’s future self on the other. The article concludes with guidelines and questions about inquiries into unpredictable futures. Quotations from long-term case studies underpin the discussion.
